I've been "off" COD since the new drops for Borderlands 2 and that is more of a fun game than a FPS. It's a shooter sure... but it's more about exploring and 'stuff' than actual FPS skills. I also admittedly do not like Treyarch games, and since the last installment (Black Ops 2) is not an Infinity Ward "COD" game. I'm lukewarm about it at best. That said, I go in pubs by myself with nearly any of my classes and 40-60<15 in hardcore KC all day err day. I can stack on hundreds of bodies to the counter in a hour or two and put it down. Pick it back up the next day and shred another small towns worth of people. Yeah, it's "boring". But it's always slick, fast, and clean. Guns do exactly what I expect, character movement is very crisp and I can mantle objects and run and jump and snap shoot people on a really high sensitivity for as long as my eyes can handle doing it.
The physical engine in COD and the actual gun play is the industry standard whether people like it or not. Yes it's the same rehashed garbage as the last 3 games. And it is so for that very reason.
When the servers were down I hopped back on B02 and felt like my FPS skills degenerated horrifically from playing Dust. I felt like the game was happening far too fast for me and I was over correcting like a hot mess. Missing people I would have never missed before. I've hit groups in succession with a flick- trigger pull and some fancy right sticking... faster than any one of them can react.
Dust is FPS under water. There are reasons for this. The MMO portion. The skills, the vehicles, etc. But don't kid yourself. There is a very heavy gear related "pad" between you - and raw FPS skills. Which include I see you first, I hit you first, you die instantly. Which is also why I play on hardcore. It removes the "kid gloves" on COD too. When you get shot you die. That's FPS at it's core.
I realize Dust is objective oriented as well. And it's a change of pace. I just wish it was a less poorly executed one. I do hope they clean it up some soon to make it more playable. Or I'll just do the next battlefield to get my obj type game on. It would be nice to see a big push before it leaves this console though. I do enjoy it. But find myself just as frustrated at the mechanics nearly as much.
Or in short, I really think Dust got a VERY large break in the ratings I have seen. Mainly for being novel in "concept" (but not execution) and free. For a shooter it's a 6.5. Max. |
